I forgot all about this movie until I noticed it on Comcast's HBO On Demand over the weekend. It's good! I own the book and have yet to read it. Russel Crowe plays a very convincing crazy guy, and some of the picture takes place on the MIT campus, which is cool. Jennifer Connelly is, as usual, really good in the movie. Go watch. The end.

You are better off not Knowing... It's terrible. It starts out just fine. Nicholas Cage gets caught up finding a paper that a school girl left in a time capsule 50 years prior that correctly predicted all of the upcoming major disasters for the coming half century. It's mildly interesting, and there is some subtlety to the movie, then the movie takes a turn off the beaten path. Far, far off. So far, the path is only a distant memory. The first two thirds of the movie are about disasters and Nicholas Cage's character deducting things. The final third is OMGWTF.

We rented this on the RCN (a local cable company in Boston) DVR and it was not worth the $4.99. Fuck, they could have paid me $4.99 to watch this and I would have refused, knowing how terrible Knowing would turn out.

I was convinced by G on Saturday night to watch this. I was worried that it would be too contrived and too gimmicky, and it was a little bit. But none of that distracted from TEH FUNNY! They really bring it! Hilarious. Totally worth renting.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price @ IMAX

Caught the newest installment of the Harry Potter series this morning at the IMAX theater at Jordan's Furniture in Framingham, MA. Even though it was a 11am showing, the theater was sold out. The only experience I'd had with IMAX in the past was a thing about Mt. Everest at the Mugar Omni theater at the Science Museum in Boston, and that was a very different experience than this. First off, the first fifteen minutes of the Half Blood Price was in 3d. Second, the seats all shook. I mean SHOOK. The sound was very loud, but not overpowering. Complete wraparound sound and a gigantic screen really made the movie a great experience, and it was worth the cost of the $11.50 ticket.

The movie itself was pretty good. It wasn't like the old Harry Potter movies, which concentrated on Hogwarts, teamwork, and a lot more innocent themes. This one was markedly darker, and the ending was wicked sad. I never read the books by J.K. Rowling, so I didn't know what to expect. There were some surprises and confusion (which I'm sure would not have been there had I taken the time to read the books), but it was a good story.

It was worth waking up that early in the morning.

Microcenter, Trader Joe's in Cambridge have no pwer

I drove over to MicroCenter a couple of hours ago and there was a telephone pole down in their parking lot with charred transformers attached to it and a couple firetrucks there. Nothing was on fire, but both MicroCenter and Trader Joe's were shut down with no power. The employees were all outside.

I called MicroCenter just now and got no answer, so my guess is that they still have no power. D'oh.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for this....

Yes, this is a $200,000 garage in Nahant. FYI Nahant is where the big sewage treatment plant is - not in the city of Boston but up on the North Shore. $200k. I'm not saying it isn't worth the price. I'm sure it is to some people. Just not to me.

This was made by Kubrick's 17 year old daughter at the time and includes some really great footage and commentary. I especially liked when Nicholson was warming up with the Ax at about 4:30.
